Why Health Care has to be Nationalized

0

Everyone has an opinion on this and I’m no exception. The health care debate will continue for years no doubt. But I feel compelled to mention my recent experience with the system. I have chronic lower back pain. I have had it for 10 years and steadfastly refused to go see a doctor about it believing there was nothing they could do other than medicate me. I have used yoga to control the pain and maintain a level of flexibility that most men approaching 40 don’t have. But my most recent bout of back pain made me decide that rather than wait the month or two it takes for the episode to pass I would try a doctor. So I went to a sports medicine Doctor who looked my back, put a TENS unit on it for 30 minutes and referred me to another Doctor. I then went to a Spine Doctor who decided to give me 4 cortisone shots in my lower spine on the right side. Now this is an involved procedure requiring a surgery center, an Anesthesiologist, and my Doctor to do the injection through x ray vision. The whole procedure took all of 20 minutes and I was out of the center in an hour. Total bill, over $3000. Now I do not have insurance, I am self employed and have always considered it too expensive. Everyone keeps telling me I should get some to at least cover catastrophic, but I haven’t seen a need to do it. I am healthy as an ox and never get sick, even colds tend to bounce off me. Of course the really aggravating thing is that if I had had insurance it would not have covered any of this. But, spending $3000 for a 20 minute procedure that, here’s the kicker, didn’t work, is absolutely insane. I would have had more fun taking a cruise and gambling the entire time than staring at my credit card bill for this worthless exercise. I can’t comprehend how my doctor justifies a $1500 bill for 20 minutes. I know 4 shots of cortisone don’t cost more than a couple of hundred dollars. I know he went to school an extra few years and did an internship and residency somewhere for a few years but is that really worth $3000 an hour? No fucking way, it’s highway robbery. The Anesthesiologist charged me $450 and all he did was inject an iv and watch the monitor. The surgery center charged me $1050 to sit in their bed, talk to a few nurses and use their space for an hour. The system is truly and completely shot and needs to be overhauled top to bottom. If my doctor billed everyone they way he billed me then he must clear $6M a year. Even if he only bills everyone 4 hours a day like I was billed it would net him over $3M.

Junius Heights Named This Old House’s best neighborhood for familes 2010

0

I have lived in Junius Heights since 2002 and have always known what a great, unique neighborhood we live in. It is the largest historic neighborhood in Dallas and has some of the most architecturally interesting houses in the city. These styles include craftsman, tudor and prairie styles.

Our neighborhood worked hard in 2005 to have the area designated as historic and placed on the national registry. This has stopped the Mc mansion invasion from moving south into our area, unlike much of the M Streets which was gutted of its older homes in the late 90′s in favor of tacky, 3 story homes with little or no character.

All this hard work is finally paying dividends. This Old House has designated Junius Heights as the best family friendly neighborhood in Dallas for 2010.

Found Rat Terrier near Lake Highlands Junior High School

0

My son found this dog yesterday and I am not sure what to do with it. It is a sweet Rat Terrier but has no tags and we had the Vet check to see if it was chipped but it was not. We already have an Australian Shepherd puppy and that is enough work for me for now so I am not looking to take on any more animals. I have emailed this flyer to several Vets near the school and I am hoping they will recognize the dog and contact me or the owner will contact them looking for the dog. It is approximatley 5-8 years old, male, and seems to be well taken care of.

Our new puppy is an Australian Shepherd

0

Rusty Australian SheppardMy son and I went to the SPCA looking for a new dog today. We had discussed this a few weeks ago and I decided I wanted some sort of German Shepherd breed. I like their loyalty and incredible smarts. When we got there we looked at 6 puppies. The first was a Siberian Husky who wanted to do nothing but bite my son. We then looked at a few German Shepherd/ Lab mixes that were all sweet puppies but too timid. My son decided to get out this Australian Shepherd. The Rusty the Australian Sheppardpuppy instantly felt right at home with us. We were sitting on this odd plastic looking Dr. Zues couch and Rusty, as we now call him, hopped right up and sat in my lap. He was calm and friendly and didn’t try to bite or claw me.  He was an instant hit. I looked on-line at the Australian Shepherd’s traits and was really impressed with how smart these dogs are.  Rusty does not disappoint, I am teaching him to sit and he already seems to have it down. I would imagine potty training him will be a cake walk and last night he spent the night in a crate with no problems. No whining or movement to speak of.

Scrabble

While in Utah we played a lot of Scrabble which is one of my favorite games. My son felt compelled to photograph the board since someone spelled “Penis” on it. img_0296 To be amused like a child again.

Trip to Snow Basin In Utah

1

I just returned from my first ski trip in a dozen years. My how things have changed. The mountain was wired with 3g service everywhere. I managed to take pics and post them on facebook while being stuck in a gondola for 10 minutes. Now that is cool.img_0247

Skis have also changed. I was informed that my old size of 210 or so was now more like 170. Apparently the skis are fatter at the edges so they can be shorter. I rented normal two days and expert one. I noticed quite a difference with the expert skis, they were a lot faster. I am debating whether or not to by my own skis. At $30 a day it seems like a good investment and would only take a few years to pay for itself if I ski every year. But there is a hick up. American Airlines wants $15 each way for each bag. That is a full day of rentals and means it would take a couple of years longer just to break even.  So unless I stumble across a deal I can’t pass up I doubt I’ll bother. It is just easier to rent, and I’m no expert.

Snow Basin was spectacular. I have been to several resorts in Colorado and even Park City and SB was incredible. Since the Olympics was held there, they completely upgraded everything including new lodges at the base and the top of the mountain. The runs were very well groomed and it was only a little icy. If you go over to the runs on the left side the they are in even better shape since the traffic is lower.  Driving there from my sister’s in Ogden was a treat img_0244everyday going between the mountains and by the dam.  I highly recommend this resort if you are in Utah.

Initial Thoughts

I blog all over the net but this is my first blog that is just about my thoughts and experiences in life. I want to blog to cover a wide variety of topics that interest me from art to politics to technology and everything in between. Hopefully I’ll get some feedback and contrarian viewpoints along the way.
